Wax Removals

“Sometimes, better hearing starts with a simple clean.”

Understanding Ear Wax and the Importance of Safe Removal

Ear wax, also known as cerumen, is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canal. It plays a protective role by trapping dust, debris, and microorganisms, preventing them from reaching the inner ear. In most cases, ear wax is self-cleaning, gradually moving outward where it can be wiped away.

Because of this, it’s not necessary or safe to use earbuds, cotton swabs, or any objects inside the ear canal, as doing so can push the wax deeper or even damage the eardrum.

However, some individuals are more prone to excessive wax buildup, which can lead to blockages and temporary hearing loss (known as conductive hearing loss). In such cases, it is recommended that the wax be removed professionally.

How Does Professional Wax Removal Work?

Your audiologist will first examine your ears using an otoscope to determine whether wax removal is necessary.

If so, one or more of the following methods may be used:

Ear Syringing: Flushing the ear canal gently with lukewarm water to dislodge and remove wax.

Manual Removal: Using a curette or specialized tool for precise removal, especially when wax is hard or impacted.

Wax Softening Agents: If the wax is dense or deep, a softening product may be applied before removal to make the process more comfortable and effective.

Important Note: Home remedies such as ear candling are strongly discouraged, as they can be dangerous and ineffective, potentially causing burns, blockages, or further damage.
