School Screenings

School hearing screening plays an important role in identifying children who might have a hearing loss. An unidentified hearing loss could be the root cause of decreased academic performance, behavioural-, self-esteem- and socio-emotional problems in a child’s life. Even a minimal hearing loss can make it difficult for a child to listen and learn in a classroom. A simple hearing screening will be able to detect if there is a problem with your child’s ears and provide you with the correct referral and intervention options. The Paarl Hearing Centre bus is fully equipped and soundproof. We currently offer annual school hearing screenings to multiple schools in our area. We might already be coming to your school so keep a look out, otherwise reach out to get more information regarding the service!

wax removals

Wax Removals

Ear wax also known as cerumen is produced by skin glands in the ear canal. It is normal to have wax in the ear as it serves to protect the ear. Wax is self-cleaning and therefore it is not necessary to use earbuds or any other object to in the ear canal. However, some individuals are prone to wax build-up and in these cases the wax could block the ear canal causing a conductive hearing loss. It is then advised that a professional removes the wax.

The reason for this is that you might damage your eardrum or push wax even deeper into the canal. However, some individuals are prone to wax build-up and in these cases the wax could block the ear canal causing a conductive hearing loss. It is then advised that a professional removes the wax.

How does it work?
Your audiologist will use an otoscope to look in the ear canal and would inform you if wax removal is necessary. We use different methods of removing wax including syringing with lukewarm water or using a curette, depending on the type and location of the wax. It might be necessary to first use a product to soften the wax to make the removal process easier.

Methods such as at home ear candling is not advised as it can be very dangerous.

Auditory Processing Evaluations (APD)

Auditory processing is commonly known as what a person’s brain does with the information their ear hears.  The brain must correctly decipher what is heard by the ear in order to attach meaning to the particular sound. Auditory Processing incorporates the abilities of attending to, discriminating between, organising, recognising and understanding an auditory signal.  Some signs of APD may include:

  • Difficulty to following verbal instructions.
  • Difficulty to hear in background noise
  • Being easily distracted or struggling to remain attentive
  • Struggling to following someone who talks fast or has a different accent
  • Having learning, reading, spelling or writing difficulties

An audiologist is the only medical professional who can diagnose an auditory processing disorder. The Paarl Hearing Centre offers Auditory Processing evaluations and will guide you through the intervention process of improving your auditory processing skills.
